Saturday, the Second Week of Lent – Mitzi

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” – Matthew 5:8

I’ve often thought there is no place more beautiful than Augusta in springtime: dogwoods, azaleas and tulips gracing our town and synchronized to bloom with the arrival of Easter. We can see God’s handiwork all around! But how often do we “see” God?

Lent affords us the opportunity to focus on our faith and walk with Christ: to take up a devotional practice, to pray more deeply, to align the teachings of Christ with our actions. Lent is a time to renew our faith by reaffirming our baptismal covenant: resisting evil, loving all, striving for justice and peace, seeking and serving Christ in all people.  As candidates for baptism, we are asked to open our hearts to be a witness of Christ’s love.

With news headlines filled with war, death, strife and increasing gas prices, what better time to plant seeds of kindness and compassion? To take a moment and ask “How are you?” To say “thank you” to a cashier? To be patient in long lines? To give others the same grace we would hope for after a stressful day?

When our hearts are pure and filled with Christ’s love, the broken world  “sees” his presence through our actions. May His love blossom in the Garden City and on the hill at Good Shepherd!

  1. Andrew Austin says:

I love that we can find God in the little things, the little moments of caring, compassion or hospitality between strangers.

Thank you for the reminder Mitzi.
